| Nest BeddingCompany-level claim | Assembled in USA, as claimed | The foam layers used in Nest Bedding mattresses are made in the United States. That is meaningful domestic production. A company that argued itself out of the easier claim
Nest Bedding publishes a page called "Why Nest Bedding Says USA Assembled, Not Made in USA". It sets out what the Federal Trade Commission requires, explains that an unqualified Made in USA claim covers the whole product and all significant components, and then declines to make one, because its foam chemistry and its latex are not all domestic.
Its founder writes that the simpler phrase would be easier for shoppers to recognise and is treated as a quality signal by search engines and shopping guides. And then:
But a shorter claim is not automatically a more accurate one. We would rather explain what happens than ask two words to carry more meaning than they should.
That is the argument this entire site is built on, made by a company about itself, at a cost to itself.
Assembled is a different word
Casper says "Designed and Assembled in America". Tuft & Needle says "Made in the U.S.A. using global components". Brentwood Home puts a Made in USA headline and a domestic and international materials line on the same page. Three companies, three different amounts of American work, three different sentences, and none of them is the same claim as the others.
