Where the ingredient and the origin are the same fact
Most makers on this site buy materials and work them. A salt harvester does not. Jacobsen Salt Co. says it harvests salt from the waters of Netarts Bay on the Oregon coast, and Alaska Pure describes hand crafting salt in Sitka. In both cases the product is the place. There is no supply chain behind the claim to go and check, because the sea is the supply chain.
That made these two invisible to the first tool that looked for them. It searched for the language of factories, and salt is not manufactured, it is gathered. Both companies were found on a second pass with the keyword filter removed.
Flour is where a mill can name its grain
Shawnee Milling Company says its plant in Shawnee produces over a million pounds of food products a day, and separately that it runs nine country elevators in Oklahoma wheat regions taking grain directly from local farmers. For a flour mill the grain is most of the product, so naming both the mill and the fields is the equivalent of a sock maker naming its yarn supplier. Very few makers in any category go that far.
King Arthur states that all its wheat flour is grown and milled in the United States. Read the sentence closely and it covers the flour and nothing else, which matters because King Arthur also sells baking tools and equipment made by other companies, some of them imported. This entry says nothing about those.
Two pages that place the company and not the food
Hayden Flour Mills writes about reviving native grains in the Arizona desert, which is a claim about growing. The page never says where the milling happens. Ceresota's page says the Uhlmann Company is in Kansas City and names the people running it, and never says where the wheat grew or the flour was milled.
Both are recorded as manufacturers operating in the United States rather than as American products, because that is the size of what each page actually says. The difference is not a criticism. It is the gap between knowing a company is American and knowing a bag of flour is.
Severino Pasta has a third version of the same shape: one sentence calls the pasta hand made and names Westmont, New Jersey, and on a close read it describes where the company began rather than where it makes pasta now.
A claim that is not about the United States
Simple Mills says all its products are made in North America, and names the two countries: the USA and Canada.
That is a clear and complete sentence, and it cannot place a particular box in either country. It is recorded here as published rather than counted as American, which is the rule everywhere on this site. A maker who names two countries has told you honestly that the answer varies, and the answer still varies.
